For someone who photographed years ago and stopped

They are not a beginner. They have simply not held a camera in a decade.

Someone who photographed years ago knows what a wide aperture does and what a slow shutter costs them. They stopped because the film ran out, or the old camera broke, or a phone was in a pocket and the camera was not.

What surprises them is how much has changed. The camera finds an eye and holds on to it, and it sees in an evening room. What has not changed is the lens beneath: a plain fifty that opens wide, which is the lens they will recognise from whatever they owned before.

So the answer is

Warm, natural photographs of people, with no editing

Canon colour is the reason people stay with Canon. Skin looks the way it looked in the room, straight out of the camera, and the small lens gives the soft background that makes a photograph feel considered.

The present

What goes with it

Not needed on the day. Add one if you want the present to feel finished.

What it gives up

One lens means one view. They cannot reach a distant subject without walking closer.

Two other ways to go

A small camera they will want to carry

Fujifilm X-T50

The colour dial, a firmer hold, and a lens small enough that the camera still disappears into a bag. This is the one to choose if the risk is that a bigger camera would stay at home.

Why not this one. It is a good deal smaller and lighter than the X-T5, and it gives up the sealing against rain to be that size. One lens also means one view.

A beautiful object that happens to be a serious camera

Nikon Z f

Brass dials on the top and a body shaped like a camera from the 1970s. It is a lovely thing to unwrap, and underneath it is as capable as anything here. The small lens keeps it light enough to carry every day.

Why not this one. The dials ask them to think before they shoot, which is a pleasure to some people and a nuisance to others.
